Military map of Kiev Upper town (16-17 century)

click on image to enlarge, right-bottom corner for expand. Kiev untill 18th century was a kind of citadel surraunded by defensive walls made mostly of ground and wood. It was necessary because of constant Tartar invasions threat. On the left you see Pechersky Gates (now the place near Square of Independence), on the top - Golden Gates and on the right - Lvivsky Gates (now Lvivska Square). Sofivska church takes central position of image. This map shows detailed defensive structure of Upper Kiev with indications of bastions and cannons position. It seems there is no signs of present street system, just contours of contemporary Volodymirska, Sofiivska and Prorizna streets. Note the most developed part of Kiev at that time was Podil (Lower Kiev) - is not shown here.

Old map of Northern Ukraine with Kiev area (1650)

This map was created on 1650 when Ukraine was a part of Poland kingdom - you can see Polish Coat of Arms on the top left corner (White Eagle). All signatures are made on Polish language (Kiev-Kiiow). Destinctive feature of the map is the unusual world sides position: North is underneath and South is on top of drawing. So the western parts of country are shown on the right part of map. You can find all contemporary towns - Brovary, Vasilkiv, Vyshgorod around Kiev and main rivers - Dniper and Desna. Intresting that all roads shown here have been preserved untill present time. Map is decorated with images of people in traditional polish clothes.

This is official Kiev map of the end of 19th century. All city is located on the right bank of Dniper and covers the territory now considered as downtown or "very central area". According to statistics, Kiev population on the beginning of 20th century was a little more then 200 000 people. And one more thing to be remarked on the map - many city parks and gardens, Kiev always was famouse as one of the most green cities in the world.
